The incense village near Hanoi: Quảng Phú Cầu
The incense village near Hanoi is Quảng Phú Cầu, a craft destination south of the city where coloured bamboo bundles form part of a working production landscape. A government account published in January 2025 places it about 35 km from central Hanoi. That distance describes the wider location, rather than the journey from your hotel to a particular courtyard. The familiar craft name remains useful when choosing a tour or explaining your destination to a driver.
For an address, the current commune is Ứng Thiên following the 2025 reorganisation. Older references to Ứng Hòa help locate the area historically. Plan the visit around what interests you: understanding the craft, photographing the drying bundles, or combining the village with another stop. These lead to different day trips, even when their titles share the same village name.

Coloured bamboo cores and finished incense
The striking bundles are not all finished incense. Reporting from December 2025 describes bamboo splitting, colouring, sorting and packing, with drying in courtyards, lanes and shared outdoor spaces. A visit becomes more interesting when you distinguish the dyed bamboo core from the later application of fragrant paste. Different workshops and products have different processes; red is familiar, but yellow and green bundles also appear in accounts of the craft.
Family work and machinery belong to the same story. A 2023 report described machine shaping and polishing alongside other stages of production. Treat that as a view of the craft at that time, rather than a promise that every workshop follows an identical routine. The craft village guide explains how to connect manufacturing with a visit to Chuông or a suitable ceramics combination.

Village visit or photography tour?
Your departure arrangements also help narrow the choice. Staying within an excursion’s Old Quarter pickup area can simplify the start, while a named meeting point gives you a different way to organise the morning. Match the accommodation and departure before building other plans around the village day.
The village and hat excursion includes Old Quarter hotel collection, a guide, entrance fees, water and a conical hat. The hat and lacquer itinerary includes lunch only with its full-day option. Another village and hat visit offers an economical introduction without a meal inclusion. A separate guided village outing includes a vehicle and an English and Vietnamese speaking guide; its food inclusion applies to the full-day version.
For photographs, the guided courtyard visit includes village permission, entrance fees and Old Quarter hotel transfers. Choose it for an accompanied visit, rather than expecting a photography course. The photography page explains the distinction. On the excursion offering Ren Pagoda as an alternative, choose the Quảng Phú Cầu option. The same applies to the journey offering Tam Chuc or the village: temple visits and cruise services belonging to the alternative route should remain separate from your village expectations. For more concentrated artisan access, see private village tours.
Incense village entrance fee and private courtyards
Public lanes and private working spaces need different treatment. Walking through a lane does not give permission to enter a family's courtyard or arrange their bundles. Households set charges for their own photo access. Carry Vietnamese dong in cash and agree the visit and photography conditions at the entrance. If a person poses or moves bundles for your image, discuss that additional work before taking the photograph.
Ask permission for workshop images and portraits, keep working paths clear and leave the arrangements to the people producing them. A published photo recommendation favours the morning, while other guided programmes also run in the afternoon. Rain can move bundles under cover. Use the timing guide to plan around production and weather rather than a fixed picture of the courtyard. Hanoi works as a base; arrange the return separately when travelling independently.

Questions about visiting Quảng Phú Cầu
Is this an official village website?
This is an independent visitor guide, separate from authorities, family courtyards and tour operators.

Outdoor drying depends on the weather and the work taking place. Rain can move bundles under cover; plan photographs around the conditions on your visit.
Should I stay in the village?
Hanoi is a practical departure base for the village excursions described here. Choose accommodation with your pickup zone or meeting point in mind.
Does a courtyard ticket allow drone flying?
Drone operation in Vietnam requires permission from the Ministry of Defence, as stated in travel guidance current on 2 November 2026. Household consent and courtyard admission are separate from that permission.
